Caring through cooking: a transformative experience of CIFP Hostelería/Ostalaritza LHII teachers in Lesbos with Zaporeak
Six teachers from CIFP Hostelería/Ostalaritza LHII in Galdakao took part in a one-week training stay on the island of Lesbos (Greece), participating in a job shadowing experience with the NGO Zaporeak. This initiative, co-funded by the Erasmus+ programme and the Basque Government, is part of the school’s internationalisation plan and has allowed the teaching staff to closely witness the humanitarian work carried out by the organisation, which provides dignified meals to people living as refugees.
During their stay, the teachers lived alongside volunteers from different countries and with residents of the refugee camp who also actively collaborate with Zaporeak. This shared experience proved especially enriching, offering firsthand insight into the realities and challenges faced by many of these individuals, and helping to foster a more empathetic, critical and transformative perspective.
The mobility was also a valuable opportunity to reflect on the role that cooking and hospitality can play in building a more just society. Preparing and sharing food in such a complex context clearly demonstrated how, beyond its nutritional value, a meal made with respect, care and dignity can become a profoundly human act — one that builds connections, relieves suffering, and restores hope.
The school’s internationalisation coordination team highlights the educational, ethical, and human value of such experiences, which not only enrich the professional and personal development of the teaching staff, but also have a meaningful impact on students by bringing a more global, compassionate and socially committed outlook into the classroom.
