URRATSBAT: Entrepreneurship, tradition and nature: an unforgettable experience for students from Galdakao in Aranzazu and Oñati
On November 25th and 26th, a group of 17 second-year students from the Galdakao School of Hospitality and the Specialization Course, accompanied by three teachers, enjoyed an unforgettable trip to the Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park and the town of Oñati.
Monday began with overcast skies and persistent rain, raising doubts about the possibility of outdoor activities. However, the weather gradually improved, bringing clear skies that allowed the group to fully enjoy the day. The natural setting, with its humid atmosphere and autumn colors intensified by the rain, provided a spectacular backdrop for the planned activities.
The day started with a visit to the Aranzazu Shepherd School, where the students learned about entrepreneurial opportunities linked to shepherding and local products. They enjoyed a tasting of artisanal cheese and a fascinating demonstration of shepherd dogs, showcasing the connection between tradition and sustainability.
Once the rain stopped and after a well-deserved hamaiketako, the group embarked on a hike through the beautiful autumnal beech forest towards the Urbia meadows. The natural surroundings, dressed in November’s vibrant colors, offered an unforgettable experience. Upon returning to the Aranzazu refuge, managed by Ede Fundazioa, the students learned about its inclusive hospitality model—a social project that combines sustainable tourism with employment opportunities for people in vulnerable situations.
The second day, dedicated to cultural heritage, began with a guided tour of the University of Oñati Sancti Spiritus, a Renaissance jewel renowned for its architectural and historical richness, as well as the Parish of Saint Michael. Edurne, the guide, provided detailed explanations, making the visit a highly educational and enriching experience.
The final stop was the Chocolate Museum, where participants explored Oñati’s chocolate-making tradition through old tools, documents, and recipes. The activity included a delicious chocolate tasting that served as the perfect conclusion to two unforgettable days.
This trip allowed students and teachers to disconnect from their daily routines, bond as a group, and reflect on how to combine tradition, nature, and entrepreneurship to build a sustainable and respectful future rooted in our heritage.
